Turns out, Lebron is from my hometown. My daughter knows where he lives - everyone does. I was talking to a doctor friend of mine recently who said people stop him when he rides his bike to ask for directions to Lebron's house (which he gladly gives). They live over in the rich section of town, a beautiful area, much nicer than Miami.

I respect Lebron. I respect his talent. I respect that in his post-game interviews he has given freely of his time, and I've never heard him bad-mouth anyone. He's the same age as my son, graduated from high school the same year, and has certainly chosen to deal with stressors that most 'kids' his age never have to address. I know his life is not perfect, and that he continues to face challenges common to all of us.

But back to the question, why did Lebron leave? I heard him say on multiple occasions that he wanted to win championships, and I believe him. Maybe he could do this in Cleveland, maybe not. I can see that it would be frustrating to be recognized as the best player in basketball, yet not win the highest prize. Are you really the best if your team is not? I understand that he wants to push himself to the limit, to grab the golden ticket. Winning is very important in America, especially for men, especially for those raised in a disadvantaged home.

But Lebron's hometown cared if he stayed. And his hometown is Akron, not Cleveland. In fact, our pastor mentioned some billboards I hadn't seen, urging Lebron to stay. The billboards consisted of single words: Family. Mission. Home. People wanted him to stay because they wanted him to affirm the value of his friends, his people, his family. From the community's point of view, we wanted our 'hero' to remain our hero and friend. It always hurts when someone leaves the nest. It always makes those left behind feel as if we're somehow unworthy.

I'm not really a sports fan (ever since my own kids graduated from high school sports). But I wanted Lebron to stay. The people in Akron, in Cleveland, in Ohio would have loved him forever. When parents desert their offspring, children always suffer. When heroes desert their followers, they feel rejected, unloved, unimportant.

But when I look at other men his age, my own son included, they're rarely at the point in their lives when they understand this. Sure, they understand intellectually. They understand very well when someone abandons them. But they don't yet see it clearly when the shoe is on the other foot. For them, proving themselves is supreme, probably biologic. Manhood is defined by achievement, not loyalty.

And dare I say it? It's just a game. Maybe Lebron comprehends this better than we do.

So I understand why Lebron left, and hope he reaches his dream. It's wonderful to rejoice with someone who achieves his fondest hope. There's nothing wrong with trying to win - nothing wrong except, perhaps, for the message it sends. But he's not yet old enough to move beyond winning.

Will he be back? I don't know. But already he's given to our community. I think he recognizes that his many blessings confer on him the responsibility to give back. Let's send him off with a hero's farewell. Let's wish him the best and make him glad to come home. Let's send him the message that we love him anyway, whether he plays basketball in Cleveland or not. He is, after all, our family and friend.

In the past fifteen years the field of endocrinology has produced vast amounts of evidence showing that the loss of estrogen that occurs normally during menstrual cycle changes puts women at greater risk for mood, anxiety, and craving disorders. Considering the prevalence of these illnesses among women, we're fortunate to be gaining a better understanding of them.

Women are more than twice as likely to become depressed. Research shows that they're also more likely to suffer from anxiety. More develop phobias. It's the same ratio for agoraphobia: nearly 8% of women become agoraphobic, compared to only 3% of men. More succumb to post traumatic stress syndrome. Seventy percent of those with social phobia are women. What could be happening here?

The cyclic nature of estrogen secretion may account for women's special vulnerability to mood and anxiety disorders, Dr. Mary Seeman reported, in the Journal of the American Psychiatric Association, in an analysis of dozens of studies on how female hormones affect psychopathology in both men and women.

The theory of "recurrent estrogen withdrawal" proposes that a low estrogen state drives the onset, or worsening, of mood symptoms in women who are predisposed--by virtue of already low serotonin levels--to mood and anxiety disorders. In 1996, researchers at the University of Edinburgh published a report discussing the molecular level at which these changes occur. Struck by estrogen's "profound effects on mood, mental state and memory" they described the hormone as "nature's psychoprotectant." Sufficient levels of estrogen must be present in the brain, that is, if psychic stability is to be maintained. Estrogen's importance to cognitive processing and memory is not a slight matter. It's been discovered that actually buffers the brain's neurons against degeneration.

By the end of the nineties mounting evidence had begun to show a unique and persistent hormone connection to almost all mental illness in women. For example, binging and purging behaviors in bulimics worsened during the premenstruum, when estrogen levels go down. So did panic attacks in women with panic disorder. Impulse disorders, too, seemed to get worse during that week or ten days before the period begins--kleptomaniacs went on more stealing escapades, trichotillomaniacs pulled more hair, skin cutters cut more skin.. All of these illnesses are related to serotonin dysfunction, and, as we've seen, serotonin and estrogen are inextricably linked.

In the nineties a Canadian psychologist, Barbara Sherwin, was conducting very interesting studies on how estrogen loss affects cognition and memory. I went to Toronto to spend a day with Dr. Sherwin in her office at McGill University. I needed a mini-course in estrogen and she was willing to give it to me.

From early fetal life, hormone receptors are present in the hypothalamus of the brain. It is here that they begin organizing brain circuitry, setting the stage for puberty, regulating subsequent adult sexual behavior, and controlling the frequency and intensity of emotional disorders. Research in neuroendocrinology has much to tell us about the pre-menopausal malaise that used to be thought the result of women's sadness over the loss of reproductive function. Now it's known that the mood and cognitive changes experienced are physical in origin.

Low estrogen affects mood. What I hadn't known, until speaking with Dr. Sherwin, is that in order to produce serotonin the brain needs estrogen. I didn't even known that estrogen existed in the brain. "There are estrogen receptors in various organs throughout the body, the brain included," she explained. "That's why estrogen loss produces so many different bodily symptoms--loss of skin elasticity, bone shrinkage, mood and cognitive decline".

When estrogen levels rise, on the other hand, as they do in the first week of menses, their overall effect is to increase the amount of serotonin available in the spaces between the brain's nerve cells. That improves mood. Within the brain, estrogen may in fact act as a natural antidepressant and mood stabilizer.

Dr. Sherwin introduced me to the work of researchers who were doing important basic science, including Bruce McEwen at Rockefeller Institute, in New York, and Joseph LeDoux, at New York University, who were discovering the molecular changes supporting the view that estrogen had profound effects on the mind and its capacities.

It wasn't long after my visit with Dr. Sherwin that I learned of an important review of ten years' worth of studies entitled, Estrogen, Serotonin, and Mood Disturbance: Where is the Therapeutic Bridge? Two researchers in the Perinatal and Reproductive Psychiatry Program at Harvard Medical School had essentially been motivated by the same question that I had: What is the hormone connection to women's mental health? Joffe and Cohen looked at a hundred-and-twenty five studies on the relationship between women's reproductive cycle hormone changes and their mental status. In study after study they found that women with histories of depression are apparently more vulnerable to recurrent episodes during periods of "significant reproductive endocrine change".

Correlation does not prove causality. The fact that someone becomes morbidly depressed exactly on the day ovulation begins and remains that way until the day she starts bleeding doesn't prove that premenstrual drops in estrogen cause mood changes, but it damn well raised suspicions. Once information from new brain imaging techniques was added to the mix, the case for a hormone connection to women's mental vulnerabilities became as close to an open and shut case as are you're likely to get. Neuro-imaging has improved our understanding considerably, indicating lightening flashes of activity in different parts of the brain during what used to be called, dimly, "that time of the month."

It is the dance between two kinds of hormones, ovarian hormones and brain hormones, that ultimately determines how symptomatic any given woman will become during her menstrual cycle, and at other reproductive risk points as well. If, for example, a woman is genetically coded to have low, or borderline levels of brain serotonin, the estrogen drop that occurs premenstrually may be all it takes to send her serotonin spiraling below the level of optimum functioning, putting her in a mental state that, for all its upsetting symptoms, mysteriously vanishes as soon as her period starts and her estrogen levels go back up.

Why does this happen? Because serotonin needs estrogen for its metabolization in the brain. The two hormones are a dynamic duo, functioning arm in arm. As estrogen levels drop, so does serotonin. When estrogen rises (as it does, for example, once menstruation begins) serotonin levels come right back up with it, and calm is restored. The ebb and flow of womens' menstrual moods is orchestrated not by the moon but by secretions in her brain and ovaries. What we now know is that the sometimes negative outcome of these secretion changes is not inevitable. Just as science has learned to modify insulin changes and thyroid changes, it can now modify ovarian changes. If you don't want to blame your mood on your ovaries, blame it on the brain. Blame it on whatever pleases you, just don't resign yourself to the view that women were born to suffer.

To me it's fascinating that the individual pieces of this important puzzle were not available to us twenty years ago. And the dynamite effect of putting those pieces together has occurred only in the last decade. Building on previous knowledge and assembling the picture step by step, endocrinologists at places like the Neuropsychiatric Institute in California, and the Reproductive Mood Disorder Program at the University of Texas Medical Center have come to understand that women are not only vulnerable during the premenstruum, they are vulnerable at all the reproductive risk points. Moreover, a woman who suffers at one of these risk points is vulnerable to becoming symptomatic at others. If she has genetically low serotonin in her brain, estrogen drops are going to affect her, simple as that.

Things have taken a more enlightened turn since then, thank God, but we are only now coming to understand what actually happens to women's mental well-being at times of hormonal stress. Women scientists in particular, including psychiatrists and reproductive endocrinologists like Barbara Sherwin, are making a unique and important contribution to the massive surge of research that is currently shaping a whole new paradigm for understanding the role of hormonally created change in female well-being and mental status.

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park is on the same list of U.S national parks along with Yellowstone, Yosemite, Big Bend, The Black Canyon, & the Grand Canyon and many others. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park has as much history and beauty as do other much more popular national parks. But much like Ohio, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is underrated & unpopular to the average traveler.

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park has over 32,000 acres of land & was designated as a National Park in 1974 by Gerald Ford. John Seiberling whose grandparents were F.A & Gertrude Seiberling (founders of Goodyear) aided in starting the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. A big portion of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath which has over 80 miles of trails.

The Ohio & Erie Canal began in 1825 & underwent construction for 2 years. The main purpose of the Ohio & Erie Canal was to transport goods & services from Cleveland to Cinncinnati then to the Ohio River onto the Mississippi river down to the Gulf of Mexico. Mules & horses would often trot on a trail near the canal boats to pull them down the canal. Locks were a big portion of the canal as well. A lock was a portion of the canal that was able to lift and lower boats by opening & closing a gate to either drain or flood water. When a canal boat pulled into a lock a crewmember would manually close a gate, let the water flood, the canalboat would raise & goods were able to be extracted off the boat. Unfortunately for the Ohio & Erie Canal the rise of transporting goods via railroad made the Canal obsolete.

Fortunately for the Ohio & Erie Canal a non-profit organization that focuses on the preservation of the canalway revived the Ohio & Erie Canal in 1989. The members of this organization created a hike-bike-jog trail called the Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail that begins in Cleveland & when construction is finished will end in New Philadelphia, which is over 100 miles of trails. Currently the towpath offers over 80 miles of outdoor fun that also include great photo opportunities, bird watching, nature watching, & people watching. During the autumn visitors get the chance to see beautiful breathtaking fall foilage & in the summer visitors can see bald eagles & blue herrons flying above making nests in nearby trees. If you decide to hike in the evening time don't be surprised if you see a deer with her young eating right off the trail! Or you may even see a herd of bucks in a field nearby! Deer are very common to see along the towpath as are: squirrels, muskrats, beavers, turtles, ducks, geese, birds, raccoons, & even skunk! But the winter months offer breathtaking views as well. Visitors can overlook the Cuyahoga Valley with snowcovered trees & streams that are frozen in certain parts. During the spring time on the canal everything comes alive with flowers blooming & trees boasting beautiful full green leaves & the smell of lavender & honeysuckle as you run, walk, or bike through the path. But what if you're not the outdoorsy type & want to stay off the trail but still want to take in all the sights & sounds of the park? Well you still have options.

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park offers a scenic train that offers visitors 2 hour tours through the park. Starting @ only .00 visitors can hop on board & be whisked away to see the natural beauty of the park & wave to joggers on the towpath. But for those adults that want to unwind & enjoy a libation or two can also pick from the Ales on Rails tour or the Grape Escape Tour. The Ales on Rails tour serves up several samples of beer & teaches guests about the appearance, bouquet, body, flavor, & finish of beer. There is also a professional chef on board that serves up some mouthwatering appetizers. If beer isn't your thing well you can also enjoy the "Grape Escape" tour. This tour serves up over 5 different tastings of wine, & also teaches guests about the "legs", body, & finish of the wine. But before guests begin to enjoy their wine they are treated to cheese & crackers. Then in between each wine tasting the chef prepares delectable appetizers to enjoy. After the wine tasting guests are able to enjoy a wonderful dessert also prepared by the chef. Both of these tours begin @ dollars but are well worth it. Ok so those are some great examples of what the park has to offer. But aside from the towpath Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) also has some amazing hiking trails. I would like to share with you my favorite trail to hike on in the park.

My favorite place to hike in the CVNP is the Brandywine Falls/Stanford Hostel Trail. Brandywine Falls is a 60 foot waterfall that cascades over layers of sandstone. The falls offer breathtaking views via boardwalk year round. Bursts of red, yellow, and orange leaves serve as a backdrop to the falls in the Autumn. Snowflakes dance on the water & icicles form around the falls in the winer months, & during the spring & summer months flowers & buds on trees bloom offering a ton of rich vibrant color around the falls. It is just absolutely an amazing site to see. But there is more to the falls then meets the eye.

Brandywine falls formed around 350-400 million years ago. The shale rocks that are behind the falls were once mud on the sea floor that eventually formed into rocks as the water eroded away. The falls are carved by the Brandywine creek. But fast forward in time to the 19th century & the Falls were able to be used to power mills & create a bustling little town, one of the earliest settlements in the Cuyahoga Valley. Unfortunately, the town eventually became isolated with the construction of the major highway system Interstate 271.

The Stanford Hostel is a part of the Brandywine Falls trail which creates a 4 mile loop of moderate difficulty due to steep hills & winding turns on the path. The Stanford Hostel is located in Sagamore Hills as well right & is right off the towpath trail. The Stanford Hostel is an 1843 Greek Revival home that was built by Connecticut farmers who relocated to be near the Western Reserve area in Ohio. The home was purchased by CVNP in 1978 & is available for viewing year round. There are so many trails in the CVNP too many to list, but I'm going to give you a brief summary of a few other trails that are as amazing as Brandywine Falls.

The Blue Hen Falls trail is near Brandywine Falls & is in the Sagamore area as well. This trail is 1.2 miles round trip. These falls aren't as large but are still beautiful. The falls cascade over 15 feet of sandstone rock, & a ravine along with a forest surround the falls. Virginia Kendell which is located in between the Peninsula & Hudson area offer towering sandstone cliffs, Kendall Lake, an icebox cave, redpine forest, & characters from the past carved into rocks. Virgina Kendall offer many miles of easy to difficult hiking. But both of these trails are worthwhile seeing as well as everything else is in the CVNP. While CVNP offers numerous hiking trails, there are other ways to entertain yourself during your visit.

Blossom Music Center is nestled in CVNP in between Akron & Cleveland. Blossom is an outdoor music venue with major acts like: Tom Petty, Journey, Aerosmith, Heart, Sugarland, Phish, & Def Leppard that rock out every summer from May-September. Blossom also puts on a wonderful 4th of July symphony followed by booming cannons & a beautiful firework display. Porthouse Theatre which is a part of Blossom invites you to delve in the arts a bit & enjoy broadway shows like: Chicago, The Westside Story, Sunshine Boys, & Hello Dolly. Another fun & educational activity that's located within CVNP is Hale Farm.

Hale Farm is a little "trapped in time" village nestled in the Peninsula area which is in between Akron & Cleveland like the Blossom Music Center. Hale Farm is an old pre Civil War settlement founded by Jonathan Hale. Jonathan Hale was a Connecticut farmer that moved his family to Ohio in 1810 for better opportunity. Three generations of the family lived on this property until after the Civil War. The Western Reserve Historical Society preserved this land over 50 years ago & turned it into a living museum with 19th century period dressed actors that spin, weave, cook, and make candles as they would have in the 19th century. Visitors can learn games that children played in that time period & really see what it was like to live in that time period. There are still cows that graze the fields, flocks of sheep sharing the same field & horses trotting along the gravel streets in the village. Hale Farm & Village is among one of the National Register of Historic Places in Summit County Ohio. It is a fun & educational place to visit. Hale Farm is also up the road from an old covered bridge that was constructed in 1870. There used to be over 10,000 covered bridges in the U.S, but currently there are only a few hundred left. After a long day of hiking & sightseeing you sure can work up your appetite. Luckily, there are several restaurants that run along the Towpath & are located in & near CVNP.

First up is Hoggy's BBQ joint located in Valley View OH, right off the towpath trail. Hoggy's restaurant looks like a big red barn & has bike racks to park your bike after coming off a long ride on the towpath. Now this is a great place to pig out (no pun intended)! They serve up some AMAZING chili cheese fries, mouthwatering ribs slathered with tangy & sweet bbq sauce, homemade sides, & sweet & moist cakes & pies. You will NOT leave here unsatisfied or hungry. This restaurant is delicious!

Next, is another one of my favorite restaurants along the towpath trail is Winking Lizard, which is located in downtown Peninsula Ohio right next to Century Cycles bike rental. This place is always packed especially in the summertime. The Winking Lizard looks like a little wooden shack with a wraparound porch, & amazing inviting smells ooze from inside the restaurant to your olfactory glands. It's right next to the Cuyahoga Valley scenic railroad track & behind the parking lot sit old time stationary train cars. But like I mentioned earlier this restaurant is located right next to Century Cycle Bike Rentals so it's a great place to go for dinner after a long bike ride. Winking Lizard is mostly known for their wings, pizza, beer, & burgers but I really love their spinach artichoke dip & wraps. I love the heavier greasy stuff too but I really crave the dips & chips. Also when you walk in, there is an old popcorn machine that is always serving up fresh popcorn that the hostess brings to your table. Winking Lizard has a full bar inside & serves up some great mixed drinks too. This is a really great restaurant to completely gorge on after burning a lot of calories on the towpath trail.

Lastly, I'd like to mention Scorchers which is a wing joint in the Valley, which is part of Akron Ohio & is right off the towpath trail. Recently, Scorchers merged with Wing Warehouse & is now a part of Wing Warehouse. Scorchers serves really meaty wings dripping with a variety of tasty & spicy sauces. Scorchers also serves the "dry rub" wings which are great too. The appetizers are great here too & they include: fresh cut fries, loaded potato skins, & fried mushrooms. Scorchers has a full bar too & serves up draft beer & other libations to quench your thirst. There are pool tables & dart boards to entertain you after you eat. Well after a long day of hiking & enjoying a big meal I bet you are ready to turn in!

Two places that I would recommend staying are the Sheraton Suites on Front street in Cuyahoga Falls, & the Inn @ Brandywine Falls. The Sheraton Suites sits right in front of the Cuyahoga river & falls. The hotel is also near Route 8 which will take you into CVNP in minutes. Rooms start around 0 dollars a night. Next is the Inn @ Brandywine Falls. This historic bed and breakfast was built in 1848 & is on the National Register of Historic Places in Sagamore Hills Ohio. The Inn actually overlooks Brandywine Falls. The b&b offers 6 rooms for their guests & they are decorated with Ohio antiques. The innkeepers serve up a fresh hot breakfast to their guests each morning & treat as though it is the guests' home.

Well I hope I have given you a thorough description of some of the beauty & wonder that the CVNP & surrounding area has to offer. This is such a wonderful place to visit for couples & or families alike. I have included photos of CVNP along with some photos of when I went on the "Grape Escape" wine tour. Sergey n. Maslennikov, a Russian doctor, who is remembered by local people, many years after his death, was born June 21, 1887 in a poor family of the merchant Nikita Maslennikov. Nikita Konstantinovich served as a head manager of the merchant Obrezkova, then became the co-owner of a wine shop. He was kind and gentle, and he loved children. One of his granddaughters recalled that he allowed them to braid his beard in braids when theywere small. His wife Elikanida Mikhailovna, unlike her husband, was a stern, practical and down-to-Earth woman. She had been saving berries from his large garden for a jam which was sold in the shop.

In 1908 Sergey graduated from the Medical Faculty of Moscow University, then worked in Alexandrov in Zemstvo hospital. In October, 1910 he married Maria Mikhailovna Sokolova. She was born in St. Petersburg into the family of the librarian of the Tauride Palace. After the death of her parents she lived with her relatives Dobronravov. Elikanida Mikhaylovna believed that orphan, bride Masha Sokolova was not a good match for her son, but he insisted on the marriage. In 1912 they had a daughter, Catherine, in 1913-Mary.

In 1914-1918, Maslennikov Sergey served in the 197 theInfantry Regiment 6-th Siberian division, in 1916, he worked in a hospital in Nizhniy Novgorod. From 1924 to 1935 he travelled around the country: he worked in the county Tashkazenskom in the Syrdarya province, then in Sakhalin, in Blagoveshchensk in the Kara-Bugaz. In 1935 he returned to Alexandrov. Since 1941 he served in the hospital, then-as a doctor in Alexander sanitation centers.

Sergey was a man of talent, really hard-working. He compiled many recipes that are still consumed by the residents of the city for treatment of sore throat, colds ... He was also a physician-researcher.

The main achievement of his life-a discovery, as stated in the "description of the invention", "symptomatic tool to facilitate the state of cancer patients".

Solzhenitsyn, one of the"correspondence Patients" of Maslennikov, is telling about this in the novel "Cancer Ward":

"Friends! It's an amazing story. I was told it by one patient who came here for a check, when I was still waiting for admission here. I then, without taking any risk, wrote a postcard with a return address of the hospital. And now came the answer already! Twelve days have passed-and the answer. And the doctor Maslennikov even apologized to me for the delay, because it turned out, he had to respond to an average of ten letters a day. And less than half an hour is not enough for a good letter. So for five hours a day, somebody was writing letters! And he doesn't get anything for that! ... And he doesn't have any staff, assistants, secretaries. All of it-when off duty. And there is no anyglory for his work either! For us, the sick patients, the doctor is as a ferryman: we need him for an hour, and then we don't know him. And those he will cure, throw the letters away. At the end of the letter, he complains that patients, especially someone he helped, stop writing him. They don't write about the doses taken and the results. And he also asked me-begged me to reply thoughtfully!

... one former patient told me about Dr. Maslennikov (an old country doctor from Alexander County, near Moscow). He has stayed there for decades-since he came there, treated in the same hospital. And then he noticed that although the medical literature was increasingly writing about cancer, he didn't have cancer patients among the peasants. Why was this? ...

He began to study.found this phenomena: that to save money on tea, the men in this whole area do not brew tea, but chaga, also known as a birch mushroom. ... So Sergey n. Maslennikov thought: isn't it that chaga that Russian peasants have been treated with for cancer for centuries without knowing it?

But obviously, this was not enough. We had to check everything. We had many, many years yet to observe those who drink this homemade tea and those who do not drink. This meant to give this drink to those who have a tumor, and take the responsibility not to treat them by other means. Then guess what temperature to brew, and at what dose, either to boil or not boil, and how many glasses to drink, without harming. Then observe which tumors it affects and which it affects less. "

Solzhenitsynexperienced the healing effect of fungus.as well as thousands of other people. Many of whom Sergey n. saved.

It is worth reading his notebooks with records of the results of his treatments. There are frequent records of full recovery. But for a long time this method of treatment was not recognized.
