However, there are towns in Arizona with elevations approaching 7000 feet that get lots of snow and are much cooler than Phoenix and Tucson in the summer.

Flagstaff ... At 7000 feet elevation gets around 9 feet of snow each year. Just last month, November 2010, Interstate 40 running through Flagstaff was closed due to snow while 150 miles to the south in Phoenix it was in the 80s.

Prescott ... The first capital of the territory of Arizona in 1863. Has around 40.000 residents. And is home to over 700buildings that are on the national register of historic places.

Sedona ... 40 miles south of Flagstaff is surrounded by beautiful red rock formations and was the site of many early Westerns. Sedona is known as an arts and craft community and has a new age influence. Sedona is one of the more expensive places to live in Arizona and is surrounded by national forest.

Payson ... An hour and a half drive from Phoenix, has an elevation of 4300 feet, and is surrounded by forests. It is reputed to have some of the cleanest air in the United States. It is an hour's drive to the Mogollon (pronounced ee-mug-yun) with an elevation 7000 feet. Payson has a population slightly over 15.000.

Of course if these towns are too small for you, Phoenix and Tucson have all the amenities youwould expect of a major city. International airports, top universities, Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, the arts, fine hospitals and like most of the state, over 300 days of sunshine.

This appeals to all of its year-round and the some half a million winter residents, affectionately referred to as "snowbirds" by the locals.
